Behind the Scenes - Build a Mood Board with Me

Welcome back!
When I build a mood board, I will start with the focus point item I have picked out. It could be the furniture, the paint or a mural. In this case, I had wallpaper picked for the space PLUS a paint colour that had to tie in from the rest of the house that I was working on. In this case, the main house is mostly painted black with a really eclectic style with a boho touch.
So with the black I had searched for a wallpaper for a fun pop and came up with this beautiful boho print that would go great with the black. Then because the client didn't want this area to also be black, I tried to find another dark colour (their request) to compliment the rest of the house since the entry way is quite open to the rest of the house and came up with BM Essex Green which a beautiful dark green favouring the gray colour family, to tie in with the black.

In this case the tile is in good shape, just a touch outdated for the clients taste. The budget does not include room to replace the tile completely. For the time being, we are going to with peel and stick tiles in a checker pattern that the client loves. This will be temporary while they save for a full replacement (this was a request, I wouldn't often suggest peel and stick for the floor where we live, it's very hard for it to hold up). Then because this is a front door I suggested a bigger rug to catch some of the dirt and grime AND to help the peel and stick tile hold up. I went with a nice deep terracotta colour because I know that is another colour carried throughout the house and a client fave. It will look fantastic with the dark green paint that we have picked out.
Next, now that the big items are chosen, we can add the filler stuff. In this case, a little bench and storage rack to go by the door in a nice bamboo colour and a gorgeous retro light that I chose fully based off the fact that it screamed the client at me, its really her style and I know it she would appreciate the beauty in this space.
Some other things you could add would be the trim, pulls, door handles or additional shelving. I also shared a tile to use once its in the budget AND a new, more modern front door for when the time comes. It is just up to them for when it can happen!

So to try and piece it together in simple terms
If you have a main piece you are working off of (paint, wallpaper, furniture) that is what I use as my base
From there if I am doing some sort of accent piece I will pick that based on my main piece
The next step is to add the adjacent items - in this case the wall colour, the flooring, the trim and the bigger pieces that we will have in the space
finally I work on the filler items or decor that will be used to finish off the space
lastly, i give further suggestions for things I may not include but as options for the client to potentially add if they like the idea!
Really I like to build one thing and work my way out from there, then I can get a feel for the most important items and continuously add to work it into my design.
