'FAST' Home Decor - Thoughts, feelings, honourable mentions

Oh Fast decor, such like fast fashion. I love it, hate it kind of feeling. Let's dive in.

What is Fast Decor?

Fast decor” (sometimes called “fast homeware” or “fast furniture”) refers to cheaply made, trend-driven home decor that’s produced quickly, often for mass consumption

Now for some there are pros to fast decor and we can't overlook that

  • often it's affordable, so for those on a budget this is the best option! If someone is looking for a quick refresh, this might be the option they pick.

  • it is often very on brand or in with the trend, if you are looking for something popular you will most likely be able to find it fast (ie. winners)

  • items cost less and therefore might give someone the ability to change out their decor more often. If you are a seasonal decorator maybe this is the option you take.

  • big retailers make it EASY to get it and FAST

There is also the downside we need to consider

  • poorly made to mass produce items, do not think long term for these items

  • fast decor, like fast fashion heavily promotes to environmental waste with quick waste or garbage from over consumptions. It's not made of biodegradable or recycled materials so if it ends in the landfill its just going to sit there.

  • because fast decor is made fast the trends will go out of style and so will the decor and contribute to the point above.

  • continuously buying lower cost decor multiple times over and over will add up rather than saving and buying long term pieces.

Ways that we can avoid fast decor

  • Decorate slow - take time, pick items with intention and save for bigger item purchases to invest in.

  • add a mix of timeless and trend in your house so you are not constantly replacing items

  • focus on brands that promote sustainability - source brands that you know have a long lifecycle even after they have served their purpose

Fast decor is great in moderation. It’s a fun, affordable way to try out trends or refresh your space, but relying too heavily on it can lead to waste, regret, and a lack of long-term value. For a balanced, sustainable design, pairing some trendy items with timeless, high-quality pieces is often the best route.
