Lets address the elephant in the room that I am sure SOOO many people are thinking about. Chat GPT will do my bathroom remodel why do I need you?
While AI and chatGPT are taking over, I truly don't feel like people in the world of interior design are going anywhere.
Design is deeply personal - it's about how people feel and use the space. Something AI just cannot grasp. It is not just about it functioning for use but emotionally, AI can't understand nuanced looks or a couples real priorities. Hence, why the personal aspect of interior design is crucial. Further to that, an interior design is going to walk through the space and notice sounds, smells, light, textures and maybe even sentimental pieces. While AI can try and simulate, it will not compare to this real life experience that the designer and client feels. Through in visit persons, a designer can ask better questions or re-adjust their design based off feedback and personal understanding of getting to know the client. AI can copy and emulate previous designs, while interior designs can come up with unique and personalized designs for each client they work with. At the end of the day, your interior design is going to tell a story, create a vision and build connection with their clients. People have the ability to connect and work on large scale projects with moving timelines, many contractors and trades and so on, something that AI cannot manage.
Let me break down the points quickly for you for why AI CANT replace the personal touch of Interior Design:
Deeper personal understanding of needs and wants
In person assessment - actual spatial analysis and understanding
Material understanding from previous work - can offer multiple ideas and based off past experience advise what to go with and what to stay away from
Human intuition - when to take risks
Continuous customization
When in person is better than AI:
Major Renovations
your space is more complex
you want face to face support / contact
custom builds or finishes (ie. cabinetry)
I cannot disagree that AI can be a huge support. It can expedite renderings and prototypes faster, leading to quicker turn arounds for your clients. It can support designers with admin tasks, leaving them more time to work specifically on your project! To give some examples AI has been integrated into Sketchup to help make renders more realistic, or mottoboard who can put together designs for designers to base some general ideas off of. AI can be extremely helpful in the idea generation or start of a project to gather intel, but further than that, its best to rope in the professionals!
Pick wisely and use caution based off the type of project you are working on so you don't end up with some weird AI version of a built house like this...
