Oh hi friends, welcome back! Look at me being all consistent with posting.. Its you guys really though, we have had some good DM's about blog posts lately, so it's giving me the drive to keep em coming! TODAY I wanted to talk all things colour drenching.

Why is it 'in'?

Colour drenching is taking over right now because it brings a bold immersive approach to your room. It combines the maximalist approach while often bringing in moody and cohesive atmospheres. Post 2020/ pandemic people really want to focus on their spaces and creating a space of comfort, coziness and safety. This colour drenching trend supports that because it feels like a big embrance from your room or space. The best impact is in powder rooms, bedrooms or offices. Smaller spaces with a big impact. Additionally, colour drenching is really a way to express creativity and bring in colour in a way that is not extremely overwhelming to the designer or room owner. Overall, it resonates with the current cultural moment: wanting spaces to feel like an escape, but also a statement.

Do I think it's a fad that will fade? Maybe. BUT, It's a design style that is evolving and growing and continuing to gain traction so I think the creative approach people are taking with it, means that it will be around for quite some time. When I think it would fade? If you do your entire home, I don't think the impact will wow you and you'll be changing it in a year or two. If you apply it properly in a space like the ones listed above, it can be a lasting space with a bold impact that remains timeless. It is a style that is growing by finding different applications! Designers predict creative paint technique like textured finishes, combining with biophilic design, or softer palettes will continue to keep it relevant.

Best approach?

The best approach is to pick your room (again, it often does best in powder rooms, bedrooms or offices!) Colour drenching is not a commitment to every room but could be more of a bold statement in one space. Pick your colours (go dark, go earthy whatever you want) and commit to the colour for the entire space. I am talking walls, doors, ceilings, trim work, built ins etc.. If it's there, it's getting this colour.

The MOST IMPORTANT PART OF COLOUR DRENCHING is the paint finish. You don't want to use the same finish for the entire space. Let me repeat myself, do not buy one can of paint and consider it done for the room. It will look FLAT, BLAND and CHEAP.

Walls are going to eggshell, trim work is going to be satin or gloss (depending on your preference for shine) and your ceiling (if the drywall is done well, will be matte. This is critical to break up the space while still using the same colour. If we skip this part, its going to look flat and a little bland.

It might feel a little overwhelming at the beginning, but once you are done the whole room feels like a VIBE!

Here is a little breakdown of the plan for my room (not done yet but some idea of what is done versus what is left to do)

  • Trim wood is satin

  • Walls are eggshell

  • Ceiling (WILL BE) matte -

    • NOTE* If you have an older house that has popcorn ceiling TEST FOR ASBESTOS.*

    • I am waiting for my asbestos testing to come back so that I can scrape my ceiling and finish the drench! I will have to really make sure to remove my popcorn ceiling with patience so that my matte paint will go on smooth and look refined and now dodgy.
